On Sunday 14th January 2018 the long awaited day finally arrived for the London Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Children’s first 90th anniversary celebration of the year and what a great Mad Hatter’s tea party it was.  700 very deserving and excited children poured through the doors of the Grosvenor House, (a JW Marriott Hotel), where they were greeted by a host of characters, clowns, magicians, Pearly Kings and Queens and two mini robots provided by Robots of London and we thank everyone involved in giving the children such a warm welcome. After having endless photos taken with the characters, the children were led down to the Great Room, where each child was handed an illuminated Snowman Head Bopper and we thank Global Marketing for this wonderful donation and Bill Liddle for bringing them.

After enjoying the piles of sandwiches, cakes, jelly and squash on offer, and also visiting the marshmallow chocolate fountain, the afternoon’s entertainment began.  At approximately 1.15pm the loud tones of bell ringer Alan Myatt, London’s Town Crier, echoed across the Great Room to open the party “Oyez Oyez”!! The lights were then dimmed and the Pandemonium Drummers who opened the 2012 Olympic Ceremony made a grand entrance with their flashing light bulb hats.  Amanda’s Action Club, Elvis Shmelvis and Elsa & Anna of Let it Glow Events then did a grand job getting the party started, which included getting some of the thrilled children on stage. Animal Fu then delighted the children with their three animal characters and they were followed by the Crystal Palace FC cheerleaders, The Crystal Girls, who performed a great routine.   Next up on stage was Lydia Lucy, a finalist in BBC TV’s The Voice and she gave a tremendous performance to some very excited children, what a brilliant voice she has.

Elite Musical Theatre Academy then delighted everyone with a fantastic compilation of songs from the musical Hairspray, and gave an excellent performance. It was now the turn of Jess Folley, who was the winner of ITV’s The Voice UK Kids 2017.  What an amazing voice she has and she treated everyone to an incredible song called ‘Tears’.  Dance 21, a group of ‘special needs’ children then delighted everyone with a wonderful dance routine and I do not think there was a dry eye in the house, it was so moving! Our wonderful Honorary Members, the Bournemouth Carnival Band then treated the children to heaps of fun and laughter and this ended with the children joining them in a conga, which led into our customary character parade and mid disco.  The floor was jam packed with children, characters and their carers all having a great time showing off their dancing skills!

A huge treat was then awaiting the children as the highly popular dancing and singing Titan the Robot came out in his 4 foot docking station, followed by huge screams of delight as he headed towards them. What followed was half an hour of non-stop hilarity, especially when Titan started squirting water and making rude noises!!  In all the years of doing these parties, I have never witnessed such scenes of sheer joy and excitement and we sincerely thank the sponsor, Keith Neilson of Craneware, who made Titan’s appearance possible!  The Crystal Girls then came on to perform another great routine and then the wonderful Maguire O’Shea Academy of Irish Dance ended our wonderful afternoon’s entertainment with a great display of Irish dance.  It was now time for the final disco, with paper streamers coming down and everyone taking to the floor and finishing with a giant conga!  We give grateful thanks to all the wonderful entertainers above who provided such a magical afternoon for the children.  There was one more treat in store before the children left and that was to be escorted through our now famous Toy Grotto, many children struggling to carry the heavy bags full of toys and fruit as they left. We thank Justin for the delivery of the amazing toys on the Sunday, all the helpers in the toy grotto and Audrey and Eva at the Heathrow Café for the fruit.  We thank DJ Dave Davies most sincerely for introducing the acts and keeping the party running smoothly, what would we do without him?

In between all these wonderful acts the Fund’s Hon. Chairman, Michael Son BEM came on stage and welcomed everyone to the party.  A cheque for £200 was presented to him on stage by Hollie and Elisa, two dancers from the Elite Musical Theatre Academy.  This money had been raised by the parents of the pupils and we are deeply grateful to them for their kind donation.  A further cheque for £433 was presented to Michael by three children and a teacher from the Gainsborough Primary School and we also deeply appreciate this kind donation.  Sean of Sainsbury’s (Low Hall) Chingford was then called on stage and he was presented by Michael with a Certificate of Recognition from the Fund for all the help and support they have given us over the years.  The Fund’s Hon. Secretary Malcolm Shaffron then had the pleasure of presenting Sean with a Certificate of Honorary Membership awarded to the Management and Staff of Sainsbury’s (Low Hall) Chingford.

An extremely important contribution to the party are all the static entertainers round the Great Room who work tirelessly all afternoon without a break, ie. the Chocolate Fountain (Mini Melts), the Portrait Artist Danny Green, Denise Mountstephens of Angel Faces and her wonderful team of painters and balloonists, the Soho Firemen (Red Watch), Colour Sergeant Richard Angel and his Army Cadets, the Oxford Street Policing Team (ORB) and Bubbiz and her Bubbly Bubbles Show and we are deeply grateful to them all.  Grateful thanks also go to Amanda Miller and Jon Marsden for organising the volunteer Police Cadets from Redbridge and Westminster, who help us to keep the children safe. We also thank Sainsbury’s (Low Hall) for very kindly sponsoring, preparing and delivering the food for the buffet on the rink and for supplying the party bag fillers.  The Committee are extremely grateful to Geoffrey Riesel, Executive Chairman of Radio Taxis, Matteo De Renz, CEO of Gett Taxi and Brian Rice, Chairman of Dial-a-Cab for their very kind donations towards the party.  We also thank Ears Radio, Kent Balloons for the helium and The Location Medical Services.
